One of Malaysia’s premier ecotourism destinations, the Belum Rainforest Resort has undergone a recent renovation and is most certainly a hidden gem to be included on any tour to Malaysia. Located on Banding Island, the resort is set in a tropical paradise offering serenity, stunning views and surroundings, adventure and a chance to get close to the exotic wildlife.

A sustainable oasis, the resort offers 103 rooms and 2 private villas, all of which are spread throughout the grounds and have been built with the aim of making this untouched part of the country accessible for locals and visitors and to preserve it for future generations. The standard rooms are simply furnished but all feature air-conditioning and wifi. Our preferred rooms, the Chengal, are the newest addition to the eco-resort. With modern industrial style interiors these quirky rooms feature indoor and outdoor bathrooms as well as garden or lake views. Luxurious private villas are also ideal for families with private pool and butler service – something rather remarkable considering your rainforest location.

The infinity swimming pool is the centre piece of any relaxing stay at the resort  – directly overlooking the magnificent lake it’s the perfect retreat after a day of trekking. For sunset views the rooftop sitting areas are ideal. For downtime you can relax in the library rooms, for children there are play areas and informative signs dotted around the resort keep you clued up on the wildlife and history of the area. Asian and western dishes are served throughout the day at the Hornbill restaurant, which can feel a little ‘school summer camp’ when busy, but the quality of the food is good. The onsite bar overlooking the lake is independently owned and so does serve alcohol throughout the afternoon and evening. The Sidai restaurant is the best place for sunset views over dinner and can be a little quieter in the evenings.

The green initiatives of the resort are showcased throughout including the restaurant chandeliers made from fallen tree branches, recycled demolition debris for decorative wall claddings and used bottles as light diffusers.
